Lindsay's Candles & Stuff Interview
Bath & Body | Bath, Body, & Candle | Candles | Cosmetics | Jewelry | Other

Our first interview is with Lindsay Green of Lindsay's Candles & Stuff!

1. Please tell us a little about Lindsay's Candles & Stuff.

Lindsay's Candles & Stuff is a small business located in Pickering, Ontario. We proudly handcraft highly-scented candles, as well as pampering soaps and bath & body products.

2. When did you decide to start your own business?

I began making candles in December of 2003 after finding a woman’s website online; she made hand-crafted candles. It was something I had never heard of before and it interested me. So I started off with a votive candle making kit and have just gotten bigger and better from there! I started the business in September of 2004 after perfecting my products. I’m completely self-taught, using information gained from the internet and various message boards. I love reading about candles, soaps and bath & body products!

3. Why did you decide to open a bath, body and candle company?

I went with what I do well. I enjoy making candles, soap and bath & body products and love sharing my products with the world!

4. What is your favorite product that you sell?

My Silky Smooth Sugar Scrub. I love the way my skin feels after using it!

5. What are the three most popular products?

Votives, Apothecary Jars and Soap.

6. Do you have a hidden gem - a product that isn’t getting the recognition that you think it deserves? Please tell us why everyone needs to know about (and use) this product.

I'm surprised my wax melt gift sets don't sell better than they do. They're an awesome price, and just perfect for small gifts. I've had people buy them for teachers gifts, or for when they're invited to dinner parties etc. as a hostess gift.

7. What are your favorite products from lines that aren't your own?

I love using other people's soaps as well, seeing how they incorporate other ingredients, or other scents. My friend Susanna at www.melis.ca makes awesome scrubs as well.

8. What advice would you give to someone who is interested in purchasing your products, but has never ordered online, or is scared about ordering something they can’t smell, or see?

Ordering online is easy! I love that you can do it at any time of day. If you're worried about not liking a certain scent, try it out in a small size, like a votive, before ordering something bigger.

9. Is there anything you wished you knew before you started Lindsay's Candles & Stuff?

No. My father has owned his own business for most of my life, so I had already seen a lot of the in's and out's of being an entrepreneur. I already knew that the paperwork would be plentiful, and that customer service is very important.

10. What advice that you would like to give to people who want to start their own business?

As for advice, be prepared to spend more than you think to get set up. Make sure you know all of the paperwork, taxes, laws, etc. relating to what you’re going to be doing. Don’t ever leave your customers hanging, respond to them immediately and do whatever it takes to keep them happy.

11. I know that you are based in Pickering, Ontario, Canada, and that you also ship to the US, since I was lucky enough to receive several of your products, which I love, from a Thrifty Boutique contest, and from the Happily Handmade giveaway. Are these the only countries that you ship to currently?

On the site I only advertise that I ship within North America. I have had customers from other countries e-mail me and order product. My cart isn't set up to accept countries other than the US and Canada, but if someone in another country is looking to order they can e-mail me and we can definitely work something out.

12. Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?

I'd just like to thank you for this interview opportunity!

And finally, just for fun

13. What are your favorite websites?

There's a message board called E-tail Therapy that I really enjoy. I also check my e-mail a bunch of times a day, so I guess you could say that is a favourite as well!

Thank you so much for allowing Etailers Mall to interview you Lindsay!
